“At Erasmus University Rotterdam we consume about 2.000.000 warm drinks each year. Unfortunately, these drinks are now served in single-use packaging. These packages add to our Co2 emissions, take up resources and eventually result in waste. Since 2022 we have collaborated with PackBack to shape a reuse strategy together with all the vendors on campus. They have supported us end-to-end in preparing a campus-wide reuse pilot for reusable cups. This pilot is an important step in exploring how we can reduce disposable packaging to contribute to our 2024 goal of becoming a Co2 neutral university.”

Our Reuse Systems

PackBack understands that every restaurant is different. Different customer groups and operations at your restaurant determine the ideal reuse system to implement. Therefore, at PackBack we don’t believe in cookie-cutter reuse systems. We currently enable two validated models to suit every context and are constantly designing new ones. Understand both models via two cases.

Account Based At EUR

At Erasmus University in Rotterdam we have implemented the account-based system. Users can use their PackBack app account to borrow reusables without paying a deposit upfront. When a customer borrows a reusable, the packaging is added to their account. They only get charged a compensation fee if a reusable packaging is not returned (on time). Reusables are returned in smart bins that automatically register returned packaging and notifies users of the successful return. We take care of the washing!

Deposit Based - Hogeschool van Amsterdam

At the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam we have implemented a similar borrow model. In this case we’ve added a smart bin that automatically tracks and reimburses the deposits instantly. We take care of the washing!
